Education
In 2000 world leaders made a commitment to “education for all” by the year 2015. The goal, expressed in the Dakar Framework for Action, acknowledges that ICTs “…have great potential for knowledge dissemination, effective learning and the development of more efficient education services.”
Experience is indeed showing that using modern ICTs in the education sector can solve a range of practical, day-to-day problems. To be effective, especially in developing countries, ICTs should be combined with more traditional technologies such as books and radios, and be more extensively applied to the training of teachers.
Another aspect of the education theme is the incorporation of ICT studies into the education curriculum of developing countries. This is essential if countries are to create a computer literate workforce; a must in today’s global economy.
In early 2005 iConnect published a series of articles exploring how six African countries are meeting the challenge of ICT in the education sector. The articles are intended to contribute to the evidence-base of real life experiences and impact in ICT for education in developing countries.
